CAD Technician
BB&E is a full service civil and environmental engineering and consulting firm, headquartered in Northville, Michigan, which services both the Federal and Industrial sectors throughout the United States. BB&E team members provide Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering and Program/Project Management Services to Federal and private sectors.
Position Summary
BB&E is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented CAD Technician to join our team to provide project delivery business process support services to the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Caribbean District (South Atlantic Division [SAA]) in Puerto Rico which is responsible for managing the planning, design, and construction of Civil Works, Military and Interagency and International Support (IIS) Projects throughout the Caribbean region. This role will assist in creating, modifying, and maintaining digital designs for civil engineering projects such as roadways, utilities, levees, channels, dams, and other infrastructure. The CAD Technician will work with AutoCAD and Revit to assist in design development, produce technical drawings, and ensure project deliverables meet specifications.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- CAD Design & Drafting
- Maintain AutoCAD and Revit Libraries, ensuring that all templates, blocks, and libraries are up-to-date and consistent with project standards
- Use AutoCAD to create detailed technical drawings and models, including blocks, sheet sets, space objects, polylines, and manage drawing layers for civil engineering projects
- Use Revit for 3D modeling and assist in creating families (custom objects) and renderings for project visualization; this includes maintaining and organizing models and assisting in the integration of data into the design process
- Assist in the development of design reports and studies, working with engineers to produce accurate, detailed deliverables, and contributing to project documentation
- Collaboration & Coordination
- Collaborate with project teams (including engineers, architects, and other technical staff) to ensure that CAD designs meet project requirements, codes, and standards
- Provide CAD support during the planning, design, and construction phases of projects, making sure that technical specifications are followed, and models and drawings are updated as necessary
- Assist in quality control by reviewing designs for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project specifications, while maintaining drawing consistency
- Project Support & Deliverables
- Produce clear, detailed, and accurate technical drawings and models to support project proposals, designs, and construction
- Provide design assistance for projects, ensuring timely production of drawings and updates, and supporting engineers in preparing final design documents for construction
- Participate in meetings to discuss design revisions, resolve issues, and provide updates on project progress
- Assist in the coordination of CAD-related tasks across multiple projects
Key Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain/maintain a NACI/CAC is required
- Knowledge and Competencies
- Knowledge of CAD standards and industry best practices in civil engineering drafting
- Familiarity with civil works infrastructure design and the specific requirements of projects like roadways, utilities, levees, channels, and dams
- Understanding of design standards and codes for civil infrastructure, ensuring compliance with local, federal, and project-specific regulations
- Knowledge of layer management, block creation, and 3D modeling within AutoCAD and Revit, particularly for civil infrastructure projects
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team and follow project timelines
- Ability to produce high-quality, accurate design work
- Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly present design concepts, technical drawings, and project updates to team members and stakeholders
- Software
- Proficiency using MS Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for document preparation, reporting, and presentations
- Expert-level proficiency with AutoCAD for 2D and 3D design tasks. Experience in managing layers, polylines, blocks, and sheet sets is required
- Experience with Autodesk Civil 3D for 3D modeling and civil design tasks is required
- Revit proficiency to manage 3D models, create families, and perform rendering tasks is required
- Familiarity with project management software and tools related to CAD design and document management is preferred
- Self-Starter: Highly motivated, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines autonomously
Experience & Education
- Experience
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in CAD design and drafting in the context of civil engineering projects, such as roadways, utilities, levees, channels, dams, or similar infrastructure projects is required
- Proven experience in supporting design work and producing technical deliverables in a civil engineering environment
- Demonstrated experience in leading or supporting other CAD staff, ensuring design consistency, and producing high-quality, accurate design documents
- Experience with AutoCAD for creating 2D and 3D designs, drafting plans, and managing design data
- Experience with large-scale civil works projects, especially those managed by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) or similar federal agencies is preferred
- Education: A minimum of an Associate’s degree in Drafting, CAD Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field is required ; a Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand/walk/climb/kneel/crouch and remain in a stationary position/sit at least 60% of the time
- Ability to operate office equipment, including computer, copy machine, phone, etc.
- Ability to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms
- Capable of lifting up to 10 lbs.
- Ability to see details of objects that are less than a few feet away
- Ability to understand the speech of another person, speak clearly so listeners can understand, and talk or hear both in person and by telephone
