Job Description

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma preferred
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively under little supervision
  • Time management skills

Position Summary:


Performs custodial duties, minor maintenance, and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, attractive, and sanitary manner.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Maintain the confidentiality of schools, teachers, students, and classrooms.
  2. Promote a positive image of the district within the community.
  3. Comply with all school policies.
  4. Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators.
  5. Perform major cleaning tasks such as, but not limited to, vacuuming, wet-mopping, sweeping, dusting, emptying trash, recycling material, and pencil sharpeners, washing doors and windows, cleaning whiteboards, and disinfecting drinking fountains and surfaces.
  6. Ensure restrooms and restroom fixtures are hygienic.
  7. Restock disposable items such as soap, toilet paper, & paper towels.
  8. If on duty during breakfast or lunch, prepare the cafeteria and clean up afterward.
  9. If on duty during night activities, be certain appropriate areas have been cleaned.
  10. Arrange furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparation for meetings, classroom activities, and events and put back in place afterward.
  11. Help respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintain a functioning physical and educational environment.
  12. Monitor activities in and around work areas for the purpose of preventing injuries and ensuring building safety.
  13. Assist in unloading of deliveries and deliver various items to appropriate parties.
  14. Secure school district facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability to the school district.
  15. Assist in major clean-up in summer, such as washing, dusting, painting, sanitizing, stripping and waxing floors.
  16. Respond to requests from staff members.
  17. Assist in keeping grounds free of trash.
  18. Perform minor, job-related maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture, and fixtures for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items.
  19. Support and communicate with maintenance for the purpose of completing custodial activities and keeping facilities and equipment in good shape.

  • Superintendent
  • Principals
  • Maintenance Personnel
  • Others, as directed

Evaluated by:
Facilities Manager in coordination with School Administration, in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy and the District's model of evaluation.

Terms of Employment: Hourly wage for a period of 12 months. Hourly wage, benefits and leave time as defined in Board Policy. Must be a U.S. citizen and have passed all background checks conducted by the District.

Working Environment: Work is typically performed in and around a student learning environment and as such may be exposed to childhood diseases. This is a physically demanding position. The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: lifting heavy objects, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing duties of this job. Workplace is usually moderately quiet but can be noisy at times. Equipment used on the job may be loud and cleaning products that can be very harmful to one's health if not properly utilized are used on a daily basis. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk or hear.
